A Taking Flight co production with Newport Live & Theatrau Sir Gar  

Touring to Opening Doors Festival (Aberystwyth), Pontio Arts Centre (Bangor), and Sherman Theatre (Cardiff). 

Production Dates: 

  • Rehearsals: Start 5th Jan 2027  
  • Opening Night: w/c 8th of Feb 2027 
  • Closing/Tour Ends: 10th of April 2027 
  • Submission Deadline: 18th May 2026

Auditions Dates:  

  • 2nd and 3rd of June – Auditions for roles playing instruments 
  • 16th and 17th of June – Auditions for roles using BSL  

About the Production: 
Taking Flight produces high-quality theatre with embedded creative access and inclusive casts. We actively encourage applications from Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent performers. As The Mab is a Welsh story, we particularly welcome applications from actors from Wales. Rehearsals will take place at Newport Riverfront.  

Audition Process: 

 Auditions will take place at the Riverfront in Newport and will follow the following format   

  • 1 hour group workshop   
  • 20 min individual audition where we may ask you to read, sign or play your instrument.   

Specific Roles  

  • SEREN (Playing age 10–12)  
    Not from Wales but has Welsh heritage. Speaks some Welsh and has conversational BSL (her mother is Deaf). Strong singing ability is a major advantage.  
  • MUM  (Playing age 30–50)  
    Deaf. Communicates using a mixture of BSL and SSE (Signing alongside spoken English). Strong multi-roling skills required.   

Ensemble:  

We are seeking 7 versatile ensemble of Actor-Musicians, puppeteers and BSL Performers to bring these stories to life. We are looking for team players with skills in one or more of the following:  

  • Musicianship: High-standard play in  Keys, Drums, Bass or Guitar. Strong singing voice.  
  • BSL Excellence: Proficiency in BSL (Level 6+ or Native users).  
  • Puppetry:  Please detail specific experience rather than “generic” skills.  
  • Multi-roleing: The ability to transform quickly between various characters.  
  • MAVIS/Ensemble: One of the Seven Witches of Gloucester. Must be a Deaf performer or a hearing performer with Level 6+ BSL.  

 

Play many roles between them including Shirley, Fontaine, Branwen, Rhiannon, King Arthur and a giant Salmon! Welsh heritage/background preferred for these roles. Ability to speak Welsh an advantage.

  • Level of Welsh language proficiency if applicable to the role
