Taking Flight
Youth Theatre
We've opened the first youth theatre in Wales specifically catering for Deaf and hard of hearing young people.
In 2020 following years of planning, thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need and the Ashley Family Foundation and support from Wales Millennium Centre and Drama and Performance at the University of South Wales we opened the first youth theatre in Wales specifically catering for Deaf and hard of hearing young people.
What will we be doing?
We’ll be playing games, making new friends, gaining confidence, learning new skills, being silly and having lots of laughs!
The Youth Theatre runs in 3 age strands, 4-7, 8-11 and 12-18. It is led in BSL and English, and there are interpreters and volunteers at every session also, to support the young participants. The sessions are led by Stephanie Bailey-Scott, who is Deaf and supported by Elin Phillips, our group assistant who is hearing.
Where will we be doing it?
We are currently holding in person sessions during term time at The Atrium, University of South Wales, Cardiff. Click here to find out more about our Covid19 policies and procedures.
There will also be additional sessions for the older age groups during the summer and Easter school holidays as well as trips outside of Cardiff for participants and their family members to see excellent theatre involving Deaf performers.
When can we do it?
Youth Theatre sessions run on Saturdays during term time.
Age 4-10 meets 1pm-2.30
Age 11-18 meets 3pm-5pm

As Taking Flight Youth Theatre develops, we will be working towards sharing events – with the young people working both as performers and in backstage/ technical roles.
Deaf creative industry professionals will be brought in to run specific sessions such as Visual Vernacular for performance, physical comedy, puppetry.
Each summer and Easter there will be a weeks’ “residency” (non- residential) for the older groups where participants will receive intensive training with sharings at the end of the week. We will also run field trips for older participants to theatre events run by leading lights in Deaf theatre.
